Canyon De Chelly, Navajo Nation, Arizona
Canyon De Chelly is a holy place. Once home to the Anasazi, then later a home and refuge to the Navajo. It's water and fertile valley floor provided food and it's high walls protection against attacks by enemies that included Americans and Mexicans. Yon can drive along the top on Park service roads, but can only visit the interior of the canyon with a Navajo guide in a 4 wheel drive vehicle or on horseback. The only way in by vehicle is to drive in the river that runs through the canyon, which is totally amazing and enjoyable. Our Guide, David, was 61 years old, grew up in the canyon (where Navajo families still live) and has been guiding in the canyon for 31 years.
