On the morning of Jan. 19, 1847, New Mexico Territorial Gov. Charles Bent and six others were attacked and killed at his home in Taos. This “1847 Taos Revolt” was in response to the American invasion of New Mexico which had occurred a few months earlier. The Americans retaliated. On Feb. 3, the rebels took refuge in the Taos Pueblo church of San Geronimo. The American army bombarded the adobe church with cannon balls and set it on fire. Many Native and Hispanic New Mexicans, mostly women and children, were killed.
